MOTION ON THE PASSING OF THEBUSINESSMAN AND PHILANTHROPIST DOUW STEYN

notes with deep sadness the passing of the South African entrepreneur and business mogul Douw Steyn at the age of 72 on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, after a short illness;
acknowledges that as a respected businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Steyn made significant contributions to the South African economy and various social initiatives, leaving behind a lasting impact on the country’s development;
recognises that Steyn, a friend of former President Mandela was a visionary with a deep-seated commitment to South Africa and its people;
recalls that when the former President was released from prison, he found refuge in Steyn’s home in Johannesburg where he completed his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom;
believes his legacy in business, particularly in the insurance and property sectors, as well as his philanthropic work, will be remembered as part of his commitment to building a better South Africa; and
extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, business associates, and all who were touched by Mr. Douw Steyn’s generosity and leadership.
