MOTION CONGRATULATING MISS SOUTH AFRICA

(R Adams)

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

1) congratulates Free State born, Mia Le Roux who made history on 10 August by becoming the first hearing-impaired woman to win the Miss South Africa pageant on Saturday, 10 August 2024, at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria;
2) notes that Ms Le Roux, a 28-year-old, BCom Marketing student at Unisa, was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one and has a cochlear implant to help her perceive sound;
3) understands that it had taken two years of speech therapy before she was able to say her first words;
4) acknowledges that starting her reign, Le Roux pledged her commitment to foster an inclusive society of marginalised groups, where “no one is left behind”, by partnering with the government and stakeholders in the private sector;
5) further acknowledges that she emphasised her reign will serve as an inspiration to differently-abled younger girls in the country, as the Miss SA organisation broke pageantry beauty standards, by being inclusive and diverse of its contestants; and
6) extends its best wishes to Ms Le Roux for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant and believes she will do the country proud.
