The ANC Study Group on Basic Education welcomes the additional recent allocation of R19.1 billion towards Basic Education by the Minister of Finance. This funding represents a progressive commitment to the future of our children, focusing on critical areas such as teacher retention and the expansion of Early Childhood Development (ECD) support, which will increase from R17 to R24 per child per day. Such financial backing is crucial as we work towards reinstating Teacher Assistants in our schools, enhancing the learning environment and providing our children with the support they need to thrive.
It is equally important to acknowledge the remarkable efforts of the 6th administration, led by Mama Angie Motshekga, in addressing the historical challenges facing our educational system. One of the most significant accomplishments has been the successful eradication of pit toilets in schools, achieving an impressive 93% completion rate that positively impacts 3,372 schools nationwide.
The Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (Asidi) and the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (Safe) programmes have been instrumental in this transformation, ensuring that learners are provided with safe and dignified sanitation facilities. This not only enhances the health and safety of our children but also creates a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
The South African government has made significant strides in enhancing the quality of education and its proactive approach to eliminating pit toilets reflects a deep commitment to safeguarding our children and improving the educational environment. These advancements extend beyond mere infrastructure improvements; they represent a fundamental shift towards creating a nurturing and supportive atmosphere for optimal learning.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has consistently emphasized the total eradication of pit toilets as a priority, recognizing that every child deserves access to safe sanitation facilities that promote their dignity and well-being. In light of these achievements, we urge all relevant stakeholders and different political parties to work together in the ongoing implementation of the ANC’s resolution for the complete eradication of pit toilets in all schools. Recognizing these accomplishments is not merely a political gesture; it is a testament to the collective efforts of the 6th administration in prioritizing the well-being of our learners.
We must acknowledge that progress in education is a shared responsibility, and collaboration is key to ensuring the continued success of our initiatives. As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that every child in South Africa has access to safe, equitable, and quality education. The education ecosystem is filled with opportunities for growth and improvement, and together, we can continue to make a meaningful impact on the lives of all learners across the nation to respond to the current socio economic needs.
