THE ANC CAUCUS APPLAUDS THE MUTUAL AGREEMENT REACHED AT THE SOUTH AFRICAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT BARGAINING COUNCIL

M Nontsele

The ANC has introduced the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the minimum wage, and legislation entrenching collective bargaining and the rights of workers and trade unions since 1994. In this regard the ANC Caucus applauds the conclusion of a five multi-year collective agreement reached by the parties at the South African Local Government Bargaining Council. This five-year milestone agreement was signed by SALGA, which represents 257 municipalities nationwide, SAMWU, and IMATU, and will see employees receive a 6% salary increase effective 1 July 2024 and an additional 1.5% from 1 March 2025.

It is the ANC policy to resolve conflict through peaceful dialogue and negotiations, so the ANC is encouraged to see parties using social dialogue to resolve their differences. Resolving disputes peacefully in collective bargaining avoids the use of violence and damage to property to force one’s demands to be met at all costs. Hence, constructive dialogue and agreement pave the way for a more harmonious and productive working environment. The agreement reached by the social partners highlights the importance of maintaining open communication channels and working towards mutually beneficial solutions.

The ANC commends the parties for not only signing this agreement but also for setting a positive precedent for future negotiations which demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative problem-solving.
