Good afternoon,

House Chairperson, the commemoration of World Aids Day by the South African Government under the theme ‘Equal Rights, Equal Access to Quality Care for all’ is to demonstrate that as this government, we believe that healthcare is a human right. I therefore remind South Africans that the ANC’s manifesto is emphatic on strengthening health services to make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all. The commitment by political leadership of our government is commendable. The co-ordination of HIV/Aids interventions through the South African Aids Council as chaired by the deputy president of the country through strategic partnerships, meaningful collaborations and following global efforts to fight HIV/AIDS have yielded good results as 77% of HIV/Aids patients have been initiated on the antiretroviral therapy.

South Africa is implementing the global strategy of ending HIV/Aids by 2030. The strategy is fostering accountability on progress towards the fight against HIV/Aids. The global targets of 95-95-95 are focused on strengthening preventative measures and ensuring that everyone knows his or her HIV status in time. This impresses upon the urgency of early treatment initiation and universal access to treatment to improve health outcomes and prevent deaths.

Honourable Chairperson, the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets change the narrative that if you are HIV positive, you are going to die. All what it suggests is that 95% of people living with HIV know their HIV status ,95% of people who know their HIV status are receiving HIV treatment and that 95% of people on treatment are virally suppressed up until it is undetectable in your blood system. The benefit for this is that the virus in one’s blood may be undetectable and if undetectable, it is also untransmittable resulting in you protecting your partner and unborn baby.

All what I can say is that we must protect the next, we must leave no one behind and #95% is possible and it is possible.
