I hereby move without notice on behalf of the African National Congress that the House –

Notes with concern that the police have arrested 565 illegal miners at a disused mine in Orkney, in North West over the past weekend.

Further, note that the illegal miners were apprehended by police when they resurfaced after SAPS and the SANDF blocked the communities in and around the abandoned mining shafts from supplying the illegal miners with food and water.

Therefore, call on SAPS and SANDF to intensify the fight against illegal mining through Operation Vala Umgodi and call on the communities in and around the abandoned mines to work with the police and support them in the fight against illegal mining and the other crimes that comes with it.
