The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House
- notes with deep sadness the passing of the South African entrepreneur and business mogul Douw Steyn at the age of 72 on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, after a short illness;
- acknowledges that as a respected businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Steyn made significant contributions to the South African economy and various social initiatives, leaving behind a lasting impact on the country’s development;
- recognises that Steyn, a friend of former President Mandela was a visionary with a deep-seated commitment to South Africa and its people;
- recalls that when the former President was released from prison, he found refuge in Steyn’s home in Johannesburg where he completed his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom;
- believes his legacy in business, particularly in the insurance and property sectors, as well as his philanthropic work, will be remembered as part of his commitment to building a better South Africa; and
- extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, business associates, and all who were touched by Mr. Douw Steyn’s generosity and leadership.
