MOTION ON THE PASSING OF LEGENDARY MUSICIAN SUTHUKAZI AROSI

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

  1. notes with deep sadness the passing of the South African music icon and actor, Suthukazi Arosi at the age of 64 on Thursday, February 13, after a battle with cancer;
  2. acknowledges that Suthu became known as one of Africa’s top voices, but she was also a talented actress under the guidance of legendary mentor Gibson Kente;
  3. remembers that she performed around the world, including in the US, UK, Germany, and other countries, and also joined the US tour of The Lion King, where she played the role of Rafiki;
  4. recalls that throughout her 40-year career, Arosi worked with many well-known artists, including Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Jonas Gwangwa, Miriam Makeba, and Hugh Masekela;
  5. understands that her powerful voice and message of unity made her a beloved figure in South African music; and
  6. conveys deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of Suthukazi Arosi in the entertainment industry.
