8 March 2025
On this International Women’s Day, observed on 8 March 2025, we join the global community in celebrating the resilience, strength, and achievements of women in all their diversity. This day is rooted in the historic struggles of women across the world who have fought for equality, dignity, and justice.
From the early labour movements of the 20th century to the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 1995, women have continuously mobilized to break barriers and advance their rights. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action remains a landmark global commitment to achieving gender equality, emphasizing the need for policies and interventions that dismantle discrimination and systemic inequality. As we commemorate this day, we reaffirm our advocacy for the full implementation of these commitments, ensuring that women—especially those who have been historically marginalized—are meaningfully included in decision-making, economic participation, and leadership.
Throughout history, women in their diversity have made invaluable contributions in shaping the world. From political leadership to scientific breakthroughs, from activism to economic transformation, women have continuously driven progress. African women, in particular, have played a critical role in advancing global development, human rights, and peace building. Leaders such as Wangari Maathai, Charlotte Maxeke, and countless others have paved the way for future generations, proving that African women are central to shaping a just and equitable society.
As the African National Congress (ANC), we remain steadfast in our commitment to the integration, inclusion, and participation of all women in their diversity. We recognize the unique struggles faced by women with disabilities, women from the LGBTQIA+ community, and those who have been historically and previously disadvantaged. We
call upon these women to take their rightful place in the economy, in leadership, and in society.
True gender equality cannot be achieved unless all women—regardless of race, class, disability, sexual orientation, or background—have equal access to opportunities, resources, and representation. We reaffirm our commitment to policies that protect, promote, and advocate for women’s rights, both globally and nationally.
South Africa’s Constitution, along with progressive frameworks such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), guides our fight for a society that is just and inclusive. Additionally, the ANC’s resolutions from the 55th National Conference reaffirm our dedication to ensuring that women are economically empowered, that gender-based violence is eradicated, and that gender representation is prioritized across all sectors.
On this International Women’s Day, we send a call to action: Women must unite! Regardless of our differences, our collective strength lies in standing together for one common cause—the fight for gender equality, inclusion, and justice. We encourage all women to take their rightful place in society, to rise as leaders, and to push forward in breaking barriers. The ANC remains committed to ensuring a just and equitable society that protects, uplifts, and advances all women.
To the women of South Africa and the world: You are powerful. You are resilient. You are the architects of change. Stand tall, take up space, and claim what is rightfully yours!
