The African National Congress (ANC) Parliamentary Caucus welcomes the decisive and overwhelming rejection of the frivolous motion of no confidence against the Speaker of the National Assembly, Cde Thoko Didiza.
The vote outcome of 282 Members of Parliament voting against the motion to 101 in favour is a resounding confirmation of the National Assembly’s confidence in Speaker Didiza’s integrity, impartiality and steadfast adherence to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
The motion brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was nothing more than a calculated political gimmick designed to undermine democratic processes, generate media headlines and waste the valuable time of Parliament. At no point did the Speaker violate any law, standing rule, or constitutional obligation.
The EFF in this motion alleged that the Speaker acted unfairly and impartially, and that she acted in a partisan manner in violation of her constitutional obligations. The EFF’s accusation of bias, rooted in the Speaker’s procedural handling of legal matters regarding the President’s interdict application, lacks both legal merit and factual substance. The Speaker exercised sound legal judgment and respected ongoing judicial processes, ensuring that the National Assembly operates strictly within the rule of law.
Since assuming office two years ago, the Speaker has conducted the business of the National Assembly with distinction, fairness, and deep respect for multi-party democracy. She has consistently applied the Rules of the National Assembly without fear, favour, or political prejudice, protecting the institution by respecting court processes so that Parliament does not overreach or violate due process. In fulfilling her constitutional oath, the Speaker continues to provide an equitable space for all 400 Members of Parliament to exercise their oversight mandate.
The decisive multi-party defeat of this motion sends an unequivocal message that the Parliament of South Africa will not be weaponised for grandstanding or partisan disruption. The ANC Parliamentary Caucus reaffirms its unwavering support for the Speaker and urges all political parties in the National Assembly to move past political theatre and focus on the vital work of legislative oversight, accountability, and serving the people of South Africa.
