Statement by the Study Group of the African National Congress on the Escalating tensions in the Middle East

01 March 2026

The Study Group of the African National Congress notes with grave concern the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly the recent military developments.

The ANC reaffirms its longstanding and principled position in defence of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of states. Any unilateral military action that undermines international law and threatens stability must be unequivocally addressed.

As a movement rooted in solidarity, justice and multilateralism, the ANC calls for maximum restraint from all parties. We urge an immediate de-escalation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic engagement under the auspices of the United Nations, in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.

Sustainable peace will not be achieved through force, but through dialogue, mutual recognition and respect for international norms. The ANC study group further emphasises the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring that humanitarian corridors remain open and accessible.

Consistent with the foreign policy posture of the Republic of South Africa, we reiterate our commitment to non-alignment, peaceful resolution of disputes and the strengthening of multilateral institutions as guarantors of global peace and security.

The ANC Study Group stands firm in its belief that diplomacy remains the only viable path toward lasting stability.
