Statement By Ms Beauty Nomvuso Dlulane On The Killing Of Family Members In Tsolo

20 October 2009

The ANC is appalled by the endemic levels of violence against women within their families, workplaces and in society as a whole;

We are particularly shocked by an incident on the 03rd of October 2009, when a grandmother and her four grandchildren were hacked to death with an axe by a family member at Tyeni location in Tsolo in Eastern Cape. The cause of the attack was not known as the suspect couldn’t talk.

The ANC will continue as part of its mandate, to combat violence and crimes against women and children by supporting initiatives aimed at tightening up bail conditions, refusing bail for offenders if they pose a threat to communities and amending laws to ensure that criminals, who deserve it, spend their time behind bars.

The ANC also calls for moral renewal of our country, respect for human life and request people to desist from easy resort to the use of force in solving of inter-personal conflicts.

We, convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

I thank you!
