Statement By Mr Eric Nyekemba On Labour Inspections At Malls
29 October 2009
In order to avoid exploitation of workers and ensure decent work for all workers, as well as to protect the employment relationship, last week the Department of Labour sent inspectors to conduct inspections at shopping malls, targeting mainly restaurants, to ensure compliance with labour legislation by employers.
The planned inspections was triggered by the possible exploitation of workers in the hospitality sector, as well as the possible existence of other irregularities relating to hours of work, payment for overtime and the maintenance of machinery used in restaurants
The inspections, took place in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape,
ANC supports this initiative and view it as in accordance with one of its key priority areas such as decent work, which embraces the need for more jobs and better quality jobs.
I thank you!
