Statement by Curtis Mabena on Housing provision
18 November 2008
The Democratic government led by the African National Congress together with our people works tirelessly to ensure that people live where they chose, to be decently housed, and to bring up their families in comfort and security.
The Gauteng Provincial government led by the African National Congress, has in the last five years made great strides in providing our people with housing thus restoring dignity to those who live in poor communities.
In the current financial year alone the Gauteng Provincial government has provided the poor people with sixty-four thousand {64 000} houses far exceeding the target they set themselves of fifty-eight thousand {58 000} for the current financial year ending March 2009. This has resulted in three hundred and eighteen thousand {318 000} people having proper shelter and enjoying security of tenure for the first time in their lives.
The African National Congress endorses the principle that all South Africans have a right to a secure place in which to live in peace and dignity. We believe that housing is a human right.
I thank you!
