Statement by Andrew Madella on Women's Health

10 June 2008

The head of the United Nations Population Fund has noted that the health of African Women is lagging behind the rest of the world. As society we need to move the issue to the top of our agenda.

Of all the Millennim Development Goals {MDGs}, goal number five - preventing women's deaths during pregnancy and childbirth - is generating the least resources and lagging the furthest behind.

The African National Congress believes that as a country we need to work to eradicate all manifestations and consequences of patriarchy, including the feminisation of poverty, physical and psychological abuse, the undermining of self-confidence, open and hidden forms of exclusion from positions of authority and power.

Critical in this regard is the creation of the material and cultural conditions that would allow the abilities of women to flourish and enrich the life of all humanity.

The African National Congress remains committed to the struggle for the emancipation of women, the combating of sexism and ensuring that the voice of women is fully heard in the running of the affairs of our country.

I thank you!
