Statement of the ANC Parliamentary Caucus Meeting

24 January 2008

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus held its regular meeting of the caucus today, 24 January 2008. The meeting was attended by ANC Members of Parliament deployed in the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces, and was addressed by the ANC national office bearers.

This was the first ordinary meeting for the year and MPs used the opportunity to reflect on the programmes of the ANC Caucus within the context of the 52nd national conference resolutions, the NEC’s January 8 Statement and its programme of action for 2008 – ahead of its Lekgotla planned for 31 January to 3 February.

In this regard, members of the caucus received a briefing on these matters from the ANC Deputy President, Kgalema Motlanthe, National Chairperson Baleka Mbete, Secretary General Gwede Mantashe, Deputy Secretary General Thandi Modise and Treasurer General Matthew Phosa.

The briefing by the national office bearers was crucial given the critical political positioning of the ANC members of parliament in relation to the implementation of the policies and programmes of the movement, guided by the resolutions of the national conference and expressed in this year’s January 8th Statement of the NEC.

The meeting also received a briefing regarding changes in the leadership structures of the parliamentary caucus as per the decision of the NEC. The following deployments have been made:

  • The Chief Whip- Nathi Mthethwa.
  • Chairperson of Caucus- Ncumisa Kondlo.
  • Chairperson of Mineral and Energy- Nqaba Ngcobo.

The Parliamentary Political Committee will be reconstituted as follows:-
