Soweto Gospel choir wins grammy award for the 3rd time
The African National Congress congratulates the Soweto Gospel Choir for winning the Best World Music Album Grammy for their album entitled "Freedom", on Sunday 10 February 2019 in Los Angeles. The album was recorded as part of the tribute to the 100 Years of former President Nelson Mandela. This is the third Grammy award for the group who won Grammy awards in the category for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2007 and 2008. The 2019 Grammy awards were hosted by the American singer-songwriter Alicia Keys with former first lady of America Michelle Obama also making an appearance.
The ANC commends the group for representing South Africa on the global stage and for highlighting the role played by former President Mandela in the liberation struggle. This Gospel group is a national treasure and their global appeal reflects the richness and diversity of South African culture and history. As the ANC we congratulate them for flying the South African flag high as cultural ambassadors.
