Powers & privileges committee to consider MPs` conduct

11 December 2014

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip notes and respects the decision of the Speaker of the National Assembly to refer the conduct of the three Members of Parliament from the ANC and the DA to the parliamentary powers & privileges committee for its consideration. The three MPs are ANC MP Peace Mabe for referring to a fellow MP as a "bastard", DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane for defying the authority of the presiding officer and for referring to the President as a "criminal", and DA deputy chief whip Mike Waters for his offensive utterances against the Speaker and disregarding her ruling.

As we have said previously, the law and rules that govern the conduct of MPs in this institution must be applied consistently, fairly, fearlessly and without any political bias to protect this institution from decay. Our rules and laws have teeth and thus must bite through their consistent application as and when conduct that threaten the integrity of Parliament rears its ugly head.

As the ANC in Parliament, we condemn in the strongest terms any conduct that undermines the decorum of the House and the confidence our people have in this democratic institution. Insults and unruly behaviour are an affront to the freedom of speech and they do nothing to enhance robust and frank parliamentary debates that must take our country forward.
