Motion without notice by the Chief Whip of the Majority Party, Dr Mathole Motshekga on the jazz legend Hotep Idris Galeta

I move without notice, that the House;

With deep sadness the sudden death of jazz legend Hotep Idris Galeta after asthma attack on 3 November 2010, at the age of 69.

That Mr. Galeta started music at the age of 7 and was mentored by a great musician Abdullah Ibrahim whom he met at high school. That through out his astonishing career, he had worked with the most acclaimed Artists from South Africa and the United States and recorded 18 albums.

That Mr. Galela was also an academic, he obtained his Masters degree with distinction in Jazz Education and Performance while studying and lecturing in the United States. He returned to South Africa in 1991 and lectured in the Music Department at the University of Fort Hare.

That he has played his role to the fullest and has made an impact in music fraternity, and has touched so many music lovers here in South Africa and abroad.
