MOTION ON THE PASSING OF PROF EDDIE MHLANGA
The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House
- notes with sadness the untimely passing on of Professor Eddie Mhlanga, the Chairperson of the National Committee on the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths, on Saturday February 5 2022;
- members that he was a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Mpumalanga Department of Health who contributed hugely to healthcare equality;
- further remembers that he was an advocate for women’s and child healthcare and was instrumental in helping implement the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1996;
- recalls that he was a professor and former head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, where many patients and staff alike held him in high regard;
- further recalls that he also served on the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Task Team on the Prevention of Unsafe Abortion and was a past board member of Partners for Reproductive Justice;
- believes the country has lost an extraordinary man with impeccable qualities; and
- conveys its deepest condolences to the family of Prof Mhlanga and friends in the medical fraternity.
