Youth unemployment is a major national challenge and needs urgent and coordinated responses to address it. Hence, the ANC views the launch by the Coega Development Corporation of its flagship driving training programme in the Matatiele Local Municipality on Thursday 23 October 2014 as a step in the right direction in skilling the youth, thus opening opportunities for employment. This programme affords unemployed youth the opportunity to obtain a Code 8 Driving Licence.
The youth of Matatiele who are unemployed and most of them from deep rural areas with no source of income to attend driving schools will be assisted by this programme. The ANC believes that the Coega Development Corporation initiative offers a long term sustainable solutions to the youth and will improve the lives of communities through empowerment and self-development that ultimately enables economic participation.
Moreover, since this programme was launched in 2012 and operates in 18 sites over the Eastern Cape Province and 2 sites in KwaZulu-Natal it has already assisted 901 people to obtain their driver`s licenses so far.
Furthermore its target for the current financial year 2014/15 is to achieve 1292 driver`s license passes. This programme is in line with the ANC Government`s call of skills development especially amongst the youth.
I thank you
