DA's Insinuations in the NCOP

21 November 2008

Chief Whip of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), cde Nosipho Dorothy Ntwanambi, has rejected with contempt an insinuation by the Democratic Alliance (DA) that the majority of the African National Congress (ANC) Delegates in the NCOP, led by the Chief Whip, have rejected President Motlanthe as the Head of State.

The motion that was moved by DA MP Armiston Watson in the sitting of the NCOP on 19 November 2008, makes several unfounded allegations that have been publicly rejected by the Secretary-General of the ANC, comrade Gwede Mantashe as “misguided and untrue”.

The motion by the DA contains distorted conflations that allege that “party leaders of the ANC are concerned that too much television exposure is given to President Kgalema Motlanthe, to the detriment of ANC President Jacob Zuma, and that pressure is being exerted on SABC bosses to reverse the situation.”

“The rules of the NCOP allow parties to either reject or adopt a motion moved without notice. In this case had the ANC members supported the motion, they would have given credence to the allegations that were rejected by the SABC and the ANC” says the cde. Ntwanambi.

“We wish to put it on record that all ANC members in the NCOP support comrade Kgalema Motlanthe as a deployee and member of the ANC”, and that “any insinuations by any party or individual is a façade of utter disinformation and a malicious intent that is intended to create false divisions and discredit ANC members in the NCOP”.
