The ANC commends its Government intervention in repatriation of the remains of its compatriots from Nigeria

D Raphuthi

The ANC commends the South African Government under the leadership of President Jacob Zuma for their intervention into the repatriation of the bodies of 85 South Africans killed over two months ago in a church building which collapsed in Nigeria. The remains of 74 of our people killed in the Nigeria building tragedy arrived in South Africa on Sunday morning, 16 November 2014.

Furthermore, the ANC acknowledges the agony, pain and unbearable traumatic experience the delayed repatriation of the deceased caused their bereaved families, their relatives and the South African nation.

The ANC also appreciates the pivotal role played by the President`s Special Envoy, and Minister in the Presidency, Hon Jeff Radebe and the Inter- Ministerial Committee to bring to an end the delay that has spanned over two months. The ANC extended its heartfelt condolences to all the families of the deceased and assures South Africans that its Government will do everything possible to repatriate the remaining victims.

I thank you
