ANC Caucus statement on DEEPAVALI and EID UL-FITR

6 November 2005

This week Hindus and Muslims - in South Africa and the world over -
celebrated two significant events in world`s religious calendar,
Deepavali and Eid ul-Fitr.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, celebrated by Hindus, symbolizes the
victory of good over evil, enlightenment and duty.

Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the Muslim month of Ramadaan, a month of
discipline, introspection and caring for the less fortunate.

The noble values symbolized by these two events are inherent in the
values underpinning the Freedom Charter and the call by the African
National Congress to create a better life for all through the building
of a people`s contract to create work and fight poverty.

These values lie at the heart of our call for moral regeneration and the
intensification of the efforts to root out corruption and consolidate
good governance.

Together with all South Africans we wish all Hindus Happy Deepavali and
all Muslims Eid Mubarak.
