ANC welcomes court ruling in favour of Tourism Relief Fund

30 April 2020

The ANC in Parliament welcomes and supports the court ruling by the Pretoria High Court in favour of the criteria used for the Covid-19 Tourism Relief fund for businesses affected by the novel Coronavirus pandemic.

Following the short-lived court challenge by AfriForum and Solidarity on the use of BBBEE as part of the criterion, the ANC fully agrees with the High Court that the criteria is flexible and does not perpetuate an unfair advantage for some over others based on race. “It is critical that government prioritizes assistance to small and medium enterprises to help sustain and grow our economy during these difficult times”, says ANC Chief Whip Pemmy Majodina.

Poverty Inequality and Unemployment affects South Africans in general and Africans in particular, therefore, it is important that transformation in the Tourism sector must be intensified. As President Cyril Ramaphosa said in his Freedom Day message, “Although we are certainly all braving the same tide, we have not been impacted in the same way by the Covid-19 pandemic”.

The ANC reiterates its long-term support for government’s BBBEE policies that seek to strike a balance in the redistribution of wealth in South Africa’s economy.

Issued by the Office of the Chief Whip, Hon. Pemmy Majodina
