African National Congress (ANC) Parliamentary Caucus send revolutionary condolences to the family, friends, ZANU PF Parliamentary Caucus and the people of Zimbabwe on the passing on of their former President Robert Gabriel Mugabe.

Born of working class parents, President Mugabe was born in Zimbabwe’s Zvimba District in 1924. A prolific scholar, he won a scholarship to attend Fort Hare University in 1949, following in the foot-steps of other revolutionaries on the African continent. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, he pursued a career in teaching.

Because of his activities related to the liberation of Zimbabwe, he was jailed by the colonial Rhodesian government of Mr Ian Smith. After his release from prison, he joined and led the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU). In 1979 he was one of the key negotiators of the Lancaster House Agreement, an agreement that paved the way for independence of Zimbabwe.

After the unity talks between ZANU and Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (ZAPU), ZANU Patriotic Front was formed which he led together with former ZAPU

President comrade Joshua Nkomo.

Under his leadership, the government and people of Zimbabwe gave support to the liberation struggle of Namibia and South Africa. President Mugabe also led efforts of SADC and OAU to support the liberation of the two countries.
