ANC Parliamentary Caucus Mourns The Passing Of One Of The Longest-Serving Members Of Parliament, Comrade Pravin Gordhan

13 September 2024

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus joins the Gordhan family, the ANC and millions of South Africans in mourning the passing of Comrade Pravin Gordhan in the early hours of Friday morning, 13 September 2024.

Comrade Pravin dedicated his life to the struggle for the liberation of the people of South Africa. He risked his life and those of his family when he became an activist in the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the underground structures of the ANC.

He made his mark as part of the ANC’s negotiating team during the transition to democracy and as part of that heroic generation of freedom fighters who became MPs in the first democratically elected parliament in 1994.

Comrade Pravin was a consummate public servant who steered the South African Revenue Service (SARS) as its Commissioner into a world-class revenue collection service from 1999 to 2009.

He served multiple terms from 2009 until 2024 as the Minister of Finance, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and Public Enterprises. He played a pivotal role as a member of the Public Enterprises Portfolio Committee when it conducted a parliamentary inquiry into allegations of state capture at Eskom.

The ANC Caucus will miss his sharp wit, moral leadership and steadfast commitment to his beliefs.

Lala ngoxolo Comrade PG.
