The African National Congress Parliamentary Caucus, has today learnt with shock and sadness of the passing of ANC MP and Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Professor Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize and extends its heartfelt condolences to her family.

In her untimely departure South Africa has lost a selfless patriot, a well -rounded cadre and experienced global citizen with vast experience in civil society struggles and a passionate defender of human rights with a commitment for improving the quality of lives of women, children and people with disabilities.

The ANC Caucus has lost a formidable leader who served with courage, dignity and respect. Cde Mkhize was an advocate for equality and the protection of women and children.

Professor Mkhize became a Member of Parliament in 2009 appointed as Deputy Minister of Correctional Services from May 2009 to June 2012. She also served in the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education and the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation. She was also the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications.

Her illustrious career saw her serving in the National Executive in the following positions:

• Minister of Higher Education and Training from 17th October 2017 until 26th February 2018
• Minister of Home Affairs at National Executive from 30th March 2017 until 17th October 2017
• Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal services at from 26th May 2014 until 30th March 2017
• Deputy Minister of Economic Development from 12th June 2012 until 24th April 2014
• Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training from 31st October 2010 until 12th June 2012

Before coming to Parliament, Cde Mkhize was the Ambassador of South Africa based in the Netherlands from 2005 – 2009 where she played a critical role as Chairperson of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

Cde Mkhize played a critical role in the progressive liberation movement, having served as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Commissioner and Chairperson of the Reparations and Rehabilitation committee from 1995 to 2003. At the University of Natal, she worked with the detainees and did trauma counselling for political survivors. She was also the Treasurer-General of the ANC Women’s League.

Caucus conveys its deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Prof Mkhize. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
