The ANC Parliamentary Caucus has learnt with great sadness of the passing of ANC MP, comrade Zamuxolo Joseph Peter. He tested positive for Covid-19, was subsequently hospitalized on 11 July 2020 and sadly passed away on Friday 31 July 2020.

Cde Zamuxolo Peter, who was born on the 10th January 1965 in a small rural town village called Riebeeck East in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), was a longstanding ANC leader in the Eastern Cape and a former UDF activist. He served in various Eastern Cape structures, including as a member of the Provincial Executive Committee. He joined the National Assembly in the 6th Parliament, serving in the Portfolio Committee on Tourism and the Standing Committee on Auditor-General. He previously served as a Ward Councillor from 2000 to 2011 and from 2011 to 2015, as the Executive Mayor of Makana Municipality.

Cde Peter was one of the most humble members of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism. He was strongly passionate about diversity in the Tourism Sector, a firm believer in the effectiveness of BBBEE and was always ready to be asked to execute any mandate of the committee. When he expressed condolences to the family of the late Queen of AmaXhosa in the Eastern Cape who had succumbed to Covid-19, Comrade Peter urged South Africans to adhere to the precautionary measures to limit the spread of Covid-19. It is unfortunate that he succumbed to Covid-19.

Cde Peter was a talented, diligent cadre and a remarkable strategist, always ready to take any task given to him by the ANC and office of the Chief Whip. He lived and prides himself on the mantra “I will not sleep until the life of the poor has changed”.

As the ANC Caucus, we shall forever keep him in our hearts. In his spirit, the struggle shall continue.

We extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, comrades and loved ones of Cde Peter. May you find comfort in the knowledge that he fought a good fight.

May your revolutionary spirit rest in peace Qabane.
