ANC CONDEMNS HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AT ZANZOU NIGHT CLUB

M Chauke

The ANC has noted with sadness the videos circulating on social media detailing incidents of violence, harassment and abuse directed toward patrons at ZanZou Bar Lounge in Pretoria recently. We condemn with the strongest terms these violations of human rights, particularly concerning the right to dignity, privacy and bodily integrity.

The leaked videos showcase extreme violence, torture, kidnapping, sexual abuse and degrading treatment allegedly perpetrated by Zanzou’s club bouncers. Several men are seen naked, and bound; an alarming display of brutality against patrons who reportedly failed to settle their bills and allegedly stole phones.

We believe the actions taken by the bouncers are unlawful, as alternative legal processes could have been used to resolve the situation without resorting to violence and humiliation. The prevalence of such human rights abuses in this sector is indicative of broader societal issues, where those with power can exploit their authority without fear of accountability.

The ANC stands in solidarity with the victims and calls for immediate action to safeguard their dignity and support their healing process. We call on the police and Human Rights Commission to get to the bottom of this and speak to the affected and the alleged extortionists.
