The ANC Caucus met through the hybrid virtual platform system this past weekend to undertake the second phase of the Legislative Sector Oversight Model Virtual workshop by all its Caucus members including Members of the Executive.
An earlier build – up legislative sector oversight workshop including Whips and Chairpersons of Study Groups was held on Saturday; 23 May 2020
In setting the political scene; Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte addressed Members of Parliament on the immediate tasks facing the ANC in Parliament and the enhanced role public representatives they needed-to play; a year later after taking office in their mandate of law-making; oversight as well as public participation.
Putting people at the centre of our law-making and oversight especially vulnerable groups such as women; youth and people with disabilities was one of the main priorities identified including enhancing collaboration with Community based organizations as well as Non – governmental organizations; faith based organizations and many sectors of civil society.
Caucus further received an input by Comrade Mondli Gungubele on the oversight role of Parliament and its impact of effective oversight in ensuring achievement of the goals of a developmental State in the context of South Africa.
Following various disparaging remarks made against Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma; also reiterated its condemnation of these racist and sexist slurs and called on the culprits to be brought to book and mandated its structures in the Western Cape to lay criminal charges against the perpetrators
As we progress to Level 3 of the National Lockdown Regulations; Caucus has called on all South Africans to adhere to these regulations and co-operate with law enforcement agencies by carrying out their own obligations as citizens including adherence to health protocols to save lives and flatten the curve.
On Youth Month June 2020
The ANC Caucus will embark on a Virtual Youth Programme under the Theme “Youth Power: Growing South Africa together in a period of COVID – 19 “
This Dialogue will be led by Young Parliamentarians aimed at educating young people about the importance of commemorating June 16 in our National Life.
Amongst others the Youth Month will be marked in the following manner:
- Encouraging engagements; discussions and conversations through themed webinar series and Facebook live broadcasts focusing on the 30th Anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela and the impact this had on the youth of today.
- To persuade young people to participate in debates and strategies on the fight against the challenging novel Corona virus
- Engage the youth in imagining a bright future for young people post Covid 19
- To highlight youth sector’s achievements and government programmes for youth development and how youth can access these to advance their livelihoods
- To strengthen democracy and patriotism, promote social cohesion and nation – building
The Youth Month Virtual 2020 Programme will also mark 44 years since the 1976 Student uprising as well as the 30th Anniversary of the Release of Former President Nelson Mandela
Amongst issues to be virtually discussed will be the following:
- The impact of COVID – 19 in the Skills Revolution
- The impact of COVID – 19 in the Higher Education sector – What needs to be done?
- Drawing Inspiration from the 1976 Generation in addressing rising youth unemployment
- The importance of Youth Entrepreneurship
- The Role of young people in the Fourth Industrial Revolution
