ANC Caucus Observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities

3 December 2021

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus joins the international community in observing the International Day of Persons With Disabilities, 3 December 2021.

Government launched this year’s Disability Awareness Month on 2 November 2021 under the theme: The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – Create and Realise an Inclusive Society Upholding Rights of Persons with Disabilities. As Caucus, we fully support and uphold the rights of people with disabilities and acknowledge that, despite the strides South Africa has made, more needs to be done to address the challenges experienced by those with disabilities.

The United Nations (UN) has declared the theme for 2021 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) as “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”

As leaders in society, we all have a role to play in creating an inclusive environment and preventing stereotypes. It is crucial that we educate society to destigmatize disabilities. We further need to ensure that access to services and opportunities is prioritized to give people with disabilities human dignity and promote equality in our society.

Issued by the Office of the Chief Whip Hon. Pemmy Majodina
