ANC Caucus Mourns Passing Of Former MP, Cde Tito Mboweni

13 October 2024

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus mourns the passing of Comrade Tito Mboweni, a former Member of Parliament, former Minister of Finance and former Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. Cde Mboweni passed away on Saturday, 12 October 2024, after a short illness.

Cde Mboweni began his political activism in the 1980s, abandoning his studies to go into exile, joining the liberation struggle. Upon his return, he was appointed as the Minister of Labour after the first democratic elections in 1994, and served in that position until 1998.

He became the Advisor to the Reserve Bank Governor in 1998 and from 1999 to 2009, he was the first black Governor of the Reserve Bank, a role he carried with excellent leadership.

In 2018, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Cde Mboweni as the Minister of Finance. His wealth of knowledge in economics enabled him to navigate the country’s finances to respond to the economic challenges our country faced. He left this position in 2021.

As a Member of Parliament, Cde Mboweni served in the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation from August 2021 until his resignation on 1 February 2022.

The ANC has lost a giant whose contribution was of great service to the prosperity and progress of our country and its people.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, comrades and all loved ones of the late Cde Tito Mboweni.

Lala Ngoxolo.
