The ANC Study Group on Defence and Military Veterans notes with distress the recent reports of the break-in at the Engineering Formation, Lyttleton Military Base in Pretoria, where weapons were stolen.

We welcome the initiative taken by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in apprehending a few suspects that have been taken in for questioning and further welcome the Department’s investigation on the matter.

As the ANC Study Group, we strongly condemn this act of criminality. It is horrific to imagine the safety of the public when there are dangerous warfare weapons on the streets as this poses a serious safety risk to citizens and leaves much to be desired about the security of the republic.

As the Study Group, will persuade the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans to initiate their own investigation on the matter and we are calling upon the security cluster to work together to bring the perpetrators to books. As a country, we cannot afford a scenario where criminals go to the extent of undermining the integrity of our defence force.
